There is still quite a backlash against "popery" even in the 21st century, but I see the morning office and vesper services as ways of connecting people with the transcendent God, not a nod to the Catholic churhc except through tradition. I got a "Short Benedictine Breviary" the last time I was at Gethsemani. But that led me later to go to my local Catholic bookstore and get all four volumes of the Liturgy of the Hours. I've NEVER been able to have what the evangelical college ministries called a "Daily Quiet Time" but I sure as heck can sit and read psalms. Great stuff. I love “breviary envy”!
